At first they were confused by the space of the room. It wasn’t a room. Instead, feet in front of them, were a long set of stairs.

Mendy was again the first to venture off and as she disappeared above them, the rest followed up the stairway.

"Stairs?"

Their arms were on fire and now they stared at an obstacle that would make their legs enflamed like a furnace as well.

They climbed. The staircase was big enough for two people to walk comfortably side by side and so they split into groups, taking a break for what they thought was around ten minutes. They stayed together and rested together. Time vanished, their eyes began to hurt and shortly following was the pain in their legs.

George was the last man in the group and Mendy led them forward.

"I'm going to kill that bastard when I see him," George said as he caught up to the group that waited for him, with his legs trying to kill him.

"You okay, George?" Marina asked resting twelve steps above him. She reached out and touched the flat, angled ceiling as she stood and leaned forward.

"Yeah, I just need to catch my breath."

One boy climbed passed Jack, not stopping. He had introduced himself as Raven. Jack followed a step behind until he was side by side. "I know your real name," Jack said.

"And?"

"I just want you to know . . ." and the boy continued to climb faster.

"Let him go," Mendy said.

The two stopped as they watched the boy disappear above them.

"This is three hundred," Mendy said, "Six hundred steps so far. Crazy?"

Jack wasn't sure what was scarier? The number of steps or the face Mendy made. It was as if she was enjoying it.

"Jack? Do you remember anything about me? Anything as all?" It was the first time she had looked worried. Through the rooms and obstacles she was calm and perhaps the only one who stayed focused. Here she was smiling, enjoying pushing her body pass its limits.

Jack thought hard and as the memories ebb in his head none contained the image of the girl who stared back at him. Her bright eyes had captured her excitement as she was ready to hear about her past but Jack found nothing. No ebb of memeories for her; of her.

"You weren't there," Jack said.

"Where?"

"Training with us," he said.

"Well who was?"

Jack thought about them training on wires and falling into nets. They learned how to balance and other skills that they though would be handy to them in the monolith but two people were missing from his memories, Paul and Mendy.

"Come on you two. You are going to slow us down," George said as he passed the two.

Marina came up behind and grabbed Jack's hand and she pulled him upwards away from Mendy.

"I don't trust her," she whispered.

"Why not?"

"I don't know?" she responded and they remained silent holding each other’s hand, feeling each others heat in their grip. It felt comforting. Relaxing and the pain in their legs had almost vanished.

Mendy passed them at the next break and Jack heard her count somewhere in the nine hundreds.

"Make it stop!"

Jack didn't remember her face but as she approached him he knew it was Lexy. She was bustier than the other girls and Jack noticed, all the men noticied.

"Make it stop!"

Mendy stopped along with the stairs; she teetered at the edge of the door. "It's over. Yea!" She hopped with excitement, the others barely crossed the threshold without help from their arms.

Lexi was the first to see the feast that waited for them and her eyes looked like they swelled up in her head. George was the one who noticed the tents and it was Mendy who notice there was no way out.

***

"Mendy! Mendy! Sign my shirt!"

"Mendy, the favorite, has just walked onto the "Trail of Courage". There are a lot of people betting on this one girl. Why? Let's watch the tape."

"Mendy . . ."

"Bravery . . ."

"Intellengence . . ."

"She has it all."

"She is the first woman to master every puzzle that has been given to her both physical and mental. She solved the Demon's Gauntlet, a maze so mind numbing people have gone mad in it’s walls, in only three hours - a world record. She’s fast. She’s strong. And most importantly, she’s smart."

"She constantly placed higher in every test, not only in her group but ever, on any test, or exam they could get their hands on."

"If anyone is coming out alive. It's this girl."

I really like this chapter, it got me interested in the story all over again with you know, them not trusting Mendy and the mystery of it.

I don't know if I should find this weird or scary that you somehow knew I really want to climb a lot of stairs. (Never climbed 300 steps of stairs but I think I would somewhat enjoy it)

i was surprised when Jack though Mendy had a face of joy for climbing all those stairs. like exercise is one thing, but lots of stairs can be really tiring.

An athlete... never thought of myself that way, but I guess it can't be any worse than the amount kilometers I walk ever day... must be at least 50 or more.... (it's my job...) LOL!
